Chapter Twelve
Brenda shot Patty a wink as Keaton ushered his wife out the door. The door snicked closed behind the other newlywed couple. Patty and her husband were alone again.
Grizz rubbed at his neck. The poor guy looked dazed. And bruised. The skin there was red from where Keaton had grabbed him.
Patty reached out to Grizz. He let her fingers glide over the sore spot on his neck. She felt his deep inhale. His skin was warm under her fingers. Grizz bowed his head, giving his weight over to Pattyâs massage.
âSo, you havenât kissed another woman in three years, huh?â
Grizzâs head lifted. His hazel eyes latched onto her blue ones. His lips, which had been in a hard, pinched line, softened.
âNo.â
His voice was a soft growl. It made Pattyâs stomach rumble. Sheâd said she wasnât hungry before. Now her belly ached for him.
Patty ran her fingers across his shoulders. Up to his neck. Through his hair. âI can help you with that.â
Patty smiled her best and brightest smile, her dimples on full display. She knew her eyes were sparkling because she felt an inner light being under Grizzâs gaze.
Grizz reached up. But instead of taking her into his arms, he wove his fingers around hers and peeled them from the back of his head. âNo, Patty.â
Pattyâs stomach stopped its rumbling. Now it grumbled a hollow protest. Above her belly, her chest tightened as her heart rate slowed.
âThatâs not how this is going to go,â he said.
âBut why?â She wanted to stomp her foot. In fact, she thought she did. But her foot was bare and barely made an impact on the soft carpet. âYou got Keatonâs blessing. You have my permission and consent. What more do you need?â
Grizz cupped her face with his hands. Patty held still for the embrace. How could she not? Being close to this man had been her goal for so long. The chaste kiss he pressed to her forehead, silenced her. But only for a moment.
He released her face and walked to the bed. Pattyâs heart kicked back into high gear. Was this it? Was it going to happen?
Grizz tore the comforter off the bed. He also snagged one of the pillows. Bending down to the floor, he began making a pallet next to the bed.
âSo, weâre sleeping on the floor our first night as a married couple?â asked Patty.
âIâm sleeping on the floor. Youâre sleeping in the bed.â Grizz pulled his shirt over his head.
Patty was momentarily distracted by the revelation of his hard, corded abs and the broadness of his chest. She hadnât seen him shirtless since heâd become an Army Ranger. Whatever heâd done in his training had honed his already perfect muscles into weapons.
Grizz was still talking as he balled his shirt up and threw it into an open duffle bag on the floor. It took a second before Patty comprehended his words.
â⦠and you have to go back to school.â
School? Was that his objection? Now would be the perfect time to tell him that sheâd dropped out of school.
